I have a 3000 diesel that is blowing oil out the exhaust. Had a valve job and that didnt help. Now im thinking piston rings, would this be my next option? Also the hyd. hiccups only when running. When its off, the 3-point dosent move. Where would my problem be? Thanks

It may be the unloading valve which is located in the end of the ram cylinder, or the o-ring for that valve, the best person to contact on this matter is Zane Sherman he is usually on the n-board, and can be found on this one as well. You can contact him by posting a question to him and he usually responds within 24 hrs, he is very knowledgeable in hydraulics and he knows these Fords inside out.

Your oil coming from the exhaust sounds like it is piston rings, if the smoke is there when the engine is warm or cold, idleing or under a load a compression test is your first step. hydraulic hiccups could be the ram cylinder o-ring and washer, you can take the side cover off where the hydraulic dipstick is and run the hydraulics to the top of its lift ability and look in with a light you should be able to see the oil flowing from the cylinder if so change the o-ring and washer. The hydraulics do not operate with the tractor off.

to clearify the hyd question. What i mean is that the hyd. hiccups when the tractor is on. the 3-point dosent move "or bleed down" when the tractor is off which tells me its not the piston seals, oh and i did look in on the cylinder with the tractor running, and there was no leaking from the hyd cylider. sonow im at a road block. I do understand that the hydros dont work when the engine is off.

I assume that you have the lift in the positon control. This could be a number of things, such as the check valve or spring for the check valve, the safety valve, the control valve, etc. Open the side and check to see where the leak is coming from while the tractor is operating. My best guess would be the safety valve since that may be opening while under pressure while the pump is operating. Once the pump stops when you turn off the tractor, the safety valve may then seat properly to keep the fluid in the system. Safety valve can be replaced easily by taking off the remote cover plate (4 bolts). The valve is under plate and is screwed into the lift cover assembly. Good luck.
