I bought an NAA that has been sitting for 10 years and trying to clean it up before I start it.How do you get the top part of the air cleaner apart to wash the crud out of it? Do you have to take the hood off to remove the whole cleaner? The shop manual doesn't say a word about the air cleaner. TIA

The air cleaner bolts to the back side of the battery box. You might find it easier to get to the nuts if you remove the battery. Also will help if you disconnect the air pipe that goes to the carb. It may take some maneuvering, but it will come out without removing the hood.
