Ford 5000 Trans Oil Level?

Need to find out the proper oil level for oil in the transmission. My generic 3000/4000/5000 tractor manual says the filler plug next to the shifting levers should have a dipstick on it. Mine doesn't. Talked to my local dealer. He said there should be an overflow plug on the side of the housing about the level of the floorboards. No luck there either. Any other suggestions?

Thanks for any replies,

Bob

On my 67 5000 with 8-speed trans, there is a small plug with a square head located on the side of the transmission next to the clutch pedal. My tractor originally had seperate sumps, but the dealer split the tractor and drilled holes to permit the hydraulic and transmission sumps to level out. This was done to many early model 5000's. There is also a drain plug by the PTO, 1" in diameter to check the fluid level.

Hi Bob,
Just looking in my Ford 2,3,4,5000 op manual, and it shows the hyd/rear axle/ trans level plug on the back of the rear axle center housing. Located on the left hand side, on the same plane as the PTO shaft. Should be a square headed plug. The tranny is a common sump with the rear end and hyd system on the 5000. What the dealer told you would be correct for a 4000, with a separate compartment for the tranny. HTH

Only the latest 5000's were common sump. I mean those that had Dual Power or were Dual Power capable. Only the last year or so. The rest have a level plug on the left side of the transmission, near the front. Not referring to Selecto Speed tractors which also were not common sump.

You got me there. I've never looked close at the early 5000. I just looked in my book, as I have a '74 4000. Now I can say I learned something today...
Take care.
