172 engine temperature red-lining

New temperature gauge is showing the engine hitting the red, and geting hot only after a few minutes of idle.

What's the harm in removing the thermostat (if there is one, I don't know. I am a new owner of the 860).

Also, how do I know of the waterpump is going bad or not working? Will the fan be loose and will I hear noises coming from it?

Fluids are low too. I lost some while putting on the gauge and didn't rpelace them.

If it's a brand new gauge, I guess the question is whether the engine is running hot or the gauge is reading high. If it's not a factory replacement gauge, there could be a mismatch between the sensor and gauge. I'd top up the coolant so I could see it in the rad. With cap off, start the engine and wait for the gauge to read hot. Accelerate the engine, and see if the coolant circulates. Flow should be apparent if the pump works and the thermostat opens. Most engines have thermostats, but I don’t know this tractor. If coolant is circulating, then the temperature could be taken with a thermometer, but readings taken through the rad fill hole may not be accurate. The top rad hose also will feel hot if the thermostat opens. Normal precautions should be observed when removing rad caps and working around running engines.

As long as the antifreeze is already low, replace the thermostat, I have had trouble with them sticking shut.
Next, fill it with antifreeze to the proper level.
You have no way of knowing what, if anything, is wrong with the system until it has run for a while full of antifreeze.
