When you convert a tractor to 12 V, do you replace the starter or is there a way to continue using the 6V one?

I feel your pain.

I too had the same problem (about 2 weeks ago), a 44 year old starter just wouldnt cut it anymore, hey wait I'M 44 YEAR OLD!!??.

anyway

followed the wiring schematic for 12 v conversion from nseries.com. as well as the 12 volt conversion story.

bought a rebuilt ($37) alternator (lifetime warranty) already had a 12v coil, used the origional 6 v solonoid, bought a new 6V starter on ebay ($97 delivered in 2 days). bought a battery at walmart ($29) bought some Number 10 wire and some number 12 wire, (10 feet of each) a handfull of connectors, about 2 hours of not so hard labor and she starts wherever whenever, no more parking on hills.

hardest part was figuring out the alternator bracket, just end for ended the generator bracket added a few washers on to the upper bracket and used the origional belt.

hope this helps

Ok thanks,

But that brings another question to mind, do you keep them positive ground? My 55 650 turns over slow and I need to 'do' the motor, so I am considering going to 12 v at that time. If the conversion goes to neg ground, how hard is the rewiring?

Thanks,
Bill

If you go to 12v with an alternator, you must go to a negative ground, no choice here.

Not exactly - there are positive ground alternators available.

However, they're not exactly common.

Generally the old 6v starters wre built very tough, and since a starter is only used a few seconds at a time, they handle the doubled voltage - makes them spin faster, but in theory should not spin for as long each time, so they come out a wash on the deal because they are massive enough to aborb the extra heat.

Probably don't want to lean on the starter button forever - you'll burn it up on 6v or 12v doing that, probably a little sooner on 12v.

What the 6-12 does do for you is make lively tractors; Fords especially it seems. Jump on, turn on the key, touch the button.....rooooo m instantly.

Nice.
