How do you know if the springs are worn and need to be replaced? On the right side I am replacing pads, all the springs and a few other odd's & ends, but after pullng the left drum today, it appears that all I need is pads, the pedal returns up so I'm assuming the springs are still ok, just bad timing on my part, $$$ are tight at the moment, otherwise I would not even hesitate to replace em, you know while you're there you might as well just do it right, just that the tire guy just blew my budget !

Billy, as long as the brake is returning and it feels normal you should be fine with a shoe replacement. Clean the backing plate well and put a touch of grease on each contact point of the shoe that touches the backing plate and you should be fine.

The pedal was returning up, and the existng pads on that side have less than 1/8" lining, seemed to operate ok, needed adjustment though, adjuster needs a cleaning, won't move easily. I checked before I took the drum off, which I thought was going to be a pain to get off, little heat by the studs, some careful taps on the back and it came right off easier than the other side, think the pads were helping it resist on that side anyways. I'll do the right side with new springs and then compare the pedal, easy way to see the difference. Not that big of a deal to get to anyways if I have to later down the road.

Funny thing I noticed, the existing pads have the FoMoCo emblem stamped in and there is a date of 4-26-72 on them, think I'll shelf em and re-line em someday.
