I have a 66 model 3000 gas burner. What grade of oil should I use for the engine and should it be Detergent or non-detergent ?

I've always used Shell oil in my 1970. When new it had 30W summer, 10W winter, then forced to change to 10W-30. It does not use any oil and has a bunch of hard hours.

I have a 63 ford 4000 diesel engine thatuses some oil. Would heavy duty 40 do for awhile untill I have the engine overhauled.I know that diesel uses 15-40. Thanks Tom

TSC has an HD 40w that I put in a MF 35 with the Perkins 3/152D engine. My prime problem was oil pressure, although it was obvious that it had burned some oil when purchased (3 months ago).

When purchased, the oil was the usual diesel black and the level was low. It was obvious that it had been neglected.

My concern was oil pressue. The MF 35 has a colored oil pressure gauge and the colors are there to tell you something.

Scale:

Starts at 5psig to 15 Red
15 to 30 Amber
30 to 60 Green

Now to counter some buffs that preach otherwise, if pressure wasn't important, why is it that the largest mfgr of tractors in the world (MF) chose to color their oil pressure gauge.

Initially, I put in my favorite oil as mentioned which brought the pressures up but not good enough. At Idle, after a workout, the press was about 20. Immediately changing to HD 40W upped the press to little over 30 with cold press right at max on the gauge (60). Additionally, since making the last change, I haven't had to add oil.

Here we go again. Religion, politics, oil.....

I like 15w-40 OTR truck oil like Rotella T. It exceeds all gas and most diesel engine applications for road, indust, farm, mining and all that.

It gives nice oil pressure (which you don't see with your idiot light; but it's still there).

Only time I use something else is when I have a worn out engine that I'm too lazy to overhaul. Then I use HD 40 single grade. (But I bought it that way. Have never lost an engine that I bought new.....maybe it's the oil.)

Probably the best advice it to keep it clean. Then it probably doesn't matter all that much.

Mark

FWIW: 10W40 - detergent, any brand as long as there is an API starburst seal on the side of the bottle.
