7710 PTO problem

I have a 7710 Ford that I was going to bale hay with but the PTO will not turn the baler. The PTO does run when its not under load(not hooked to the baler) and does shut off ok also. The dual power works good on the tractor and I have good hydraulic pressure (2000 PSI at the remotes). Is there another pump that runs just the PTO? Could I take the hydraulic plate off on the rear right side of the tractor and look inside? Any suggestions appreciated.

There is a piggy back pump built into the main trans mounted hydraulic pump that provides the low pressure for both the dual power and the pto. You can T into the supply line for the dual power on the side of the tractor and get a pressure reading for that circuit. Check it in both low and high dual power speeds. If it has good pressure in one but not the other then the problem is in the dual power unit. I don't have a service manual in front of me so I can't say what the proper pressure is supposed to be.

Spec is 160 - 180 psi at 850 rmp, warm oil, although 140 will probably do. Under 100 psi, and things stop working. Also check the filter screen to the rear of the main hyd filter and operation of PTO brake. If brake is fine, dual power is fine, and pressure is fine except when the PTO is engaged, then it's probably bad sealing rings in PTO clutch support. Otherwise, the clutch plates are probably worn out. HTH.

I already took out that little screen next to the hydraulic filter and cleaned it. The plates in the PTO were recently replaced with new ones as were the all the dual power plates. I will try to rig up something with a tee to test the pressure, however if the dual power works good in both high and low-shouldn't the pressure be OK?

Yes, probably. But test the pressures with the PTO off and on; with the DP in low and high. Covering all the bases will identify the source of (almost) any pressure drop.
