Its an older model 3000, probaly 67. Its blowing oil out the exhaust pipe. I had the head reworked with new valves and seats. Now im thinking its the rings, is this the case? Do I need new rings?

Our 3600 diesel done the same thing. Had to be overhauled to remedy. Incidently the injectors and pump checked ok and it still slobbered out the exhaust.

My knee jerk next thought would be the oil is not draining down from the valve gallery, that the exhaust guide clearance is excessive, but you said you been throught the head. If that much oil was coming by the rings, you would have had a runaway by now.

Iffin it was mine, I would pull the exhaust manifold and see which cylinder(s) was affected. Was the head checked for flatness?

I had thought about running the engine without the exhaust manifold to see which cylinder was blowing the oil, but in my hast, I took it apart to quickly. I guess its trial and error with me.

Its the actual raw oil from the engine block. It smokes, but its also got a major oil leak somewhere.

Is the oil, unburnt fuel? Probably just slobbering. Hook up to a load and work it socks off for a day or so. Plowing or disking. The cylinders get coated with a varnish that lowers compression if it just loafs around and the unburnt fuel gets blown out the exhaust.

I think Ernie is correct. It's slobbering fuel oil. Either not working hard enough, or rpm's aren't kept high enough, I keep my 3 cyl diesel at least at 1500 rpm., or there is a bad injector which is not atomizing the fuel enough.

Is this raw oil or just plain old blue smoke?

Are you sure its lube oil?
Maybe you've got a bad injector.
