Ford 641 Smoking and Fouling Plugs

My 641 was skipping. The plugs were black and the wires needed changing. I got new plug wires, and a new set of Autolite 216's. After a couple hours of running, it has started skipping again, and the plugs are getting black once more. It is also smoking some, not sure if that's part of the problem. Where should I start looking? Carb adjustment? Timing? Any other ideas?

Worked on a Lincoln welder that would do the ssame thing in about a week. He used ATF oil in the wet bat air cleaner, cleaned out the air cleaner mess (to get rid of the ATF on the mess) and put in engine oil, problem solved.

Oil so thin that engine was sucking it out of the sump. I think ATF is about 20w.

Memory....memory????? The 216 may be comparable to the Champion H10. If so I think the next hotter plug is 232 or thereabouts, corresponding to the H12. A hotter plug can help both types of problems Jerry mentioned.

I think I found on some message here that the 437 Autolite was the next one up, equivilant to the H-12. If I'm burning a little oil and smoking, will the hotter plug solve the problem? Will it cause other problems?

My experience with mature engines is that the hotter plug burns off the impurities better and remains in service longer.

Only problem I ever heard of was a guy that ran 40 miles up the Intercoastal waterway with his outboard at full throttle (1 hr) and the boat was full of camping stuff. Burned a hole in a piston (or 2) and they said it was because his plugs were too hot..... yeah right.

If the plugs are very black and wet looking, the problem is likely loss of oil control from the oil control rings. You're likely to need a ring job.
If the black stuff is kinda' fluffy, like carbon black, it's likely to be caused by too rich a mixture so adjust your carburetor.

Autolite 437 won't cause any problems. It's hotter than the 416 which is the equivalent of the original H12.
