Brake Rachet Rivet

Long-winded explanation follows...
My 1967 Ford 3000 has a rear-wheel brake-lock which is activated by pulling-up a handle on the right-hand footrest and then depressing the brake pedals, whence a pawl engages a ratchet rivetted to the left-hand pedal to hold the brake on.
The ratchet on mine is very worn and doesn't latch properly. I've managed to acquire a new ratchet, but I have to drill the old rivets out to remove it, and then rivet the new one on instead. There are two rivet-holes, about 5/16" diameter. My questions are :-
1) Is mild-steel OK for the rivets, or should I be using something tougher ?
2) Should I put the rivets in red-hot, or would that risk drawing the temper on the ratchet ?

Bob,

Have you already replaced the pawl? My brake lock on my 1973 Ford 2000 was slipping. I replaced the pawl and it's working fine. It's cheap and easy. If you haven't already replaced it, you might want to try that before you replace the ratchet on the brake lever.

Good luck,

Tom - No, it's definitely the ratchet that's worn - see next reply.

I had that problem but fixed it without new parts.I used a small cutoff wheel in a dremel rotory tool to cut and reshape the teeth in the rachet and pawl.It worked beautiful, took about 30 minutes from start to finish.

Jim - I thought about doing that, but the teeth are completely gone in the middle of the ratchet, there's not enough metal left to re-shape into teeth...
