Hi all,

My father-in-law purchased an 860 last year. This year the kids bought a brush hog for father's day, and we found out the pto clutch is frozen. How can I break this loose? I don't mind turning a wrench, but if I can do this without splitting the tractor, I'll be a happy camper. I have read similar posts but didn't see one for the pto frozen. I appreciate any input!

Thanks,
Ben, Lapeer,MI

Thank you to all for your input. I will be mowing this weekend so I'll have plenty of opportunity to use your suggestions.

Thanks again,

Ben

Ben,At the point where the rod connects to the clutch lever there is a clevis to make the connection. The clevis will have two holes, with only one being used at a time. For the PTO to work correctly the pin should be in the rear hole. With the pin in this hole the tractor should stop and the transmission shifted with the clutch petal pressed about halfway down. When the petal is pressed fully down the PTO should be shifted in or out of gear.In other words the shaft should stop when the petal is fully pressed down.Look up on the same lever the clevis is connected to and you will see an adjusting screw with a jam nut on it.Set a 12" ruler or a yardstick on the very front edge of the footrest.while holding the slack out of the cluch petal measure the distance from the top front edge of the footrest to the top edge of the petal.document this measurment. Now release the petal to remove the slack. The measurement should now be 3/4" shorter than your first measurment. If not loosen the jam nut and set correctly with the adjusting screw. If your clutch assembly is in good condition your PTO should now work correctly. 'NOTE' Some people like to run the clutch rod in the first or 'front' hole. This drops the clutch petal height making it easier for some to operate the tractor. But with the rod in this position you cannot shift the PTO in gear when the engine is running. The PTO also will not stop until you turn off the engine.Later.

( hijacking the thread a little bit )
On my 841, I've noticed that sometimes I cannot get the PTO lever to engage (push backwards I think) unless I put just a little presure on the lever and let the clutch out just a hair. Then it slips right in (engages). At other times I can flip it on with no problems. Is this also an external adjustment ?

If it's not grinding, you just have the teeth stopped directly across from each other, & needs a little 'push' to let the teeth mesh with each other & engage.

At least that is how it sounds to me from far away, everything normal....

Thank you for a quick reply. I can start the tractor with the PTO engaged. I mowed in two acres of fairly heavy grass (over 12 in.), but no change. With the tractor running, I can depress the clutch to the footrest, but only grind the gears when trying to engage the PTO. The clutch pedal is at the highest point by the clevis pin. If there is any other history or information I can provide, please let me know.

Ben, just a quick thought, be sure that the clevis on the front of the clutch linkage is in the position that raises the pedal to the highest point, if not then move it into that position and try again. Let us know if you are able to engage the PTO when the tractor is not running then start it up and see if the pto is turning. If it is at that point hook it up to the brush hog and work it for a while, if the disk is just sludged up useing it under a load may free it to the point where it starts to work again. Post back and let us know.

While using it under a heavy load push the clutch all the way in. Keep pushing it in and out under a load and it should break free if the clutch is just stuck and that is what it sounds like because you said you can engage and disengage it if you turn the engine off. If not then you will have to split the tractor. It is really not that hard to split if you have a good hard level surface, and good floor jacks. I just recently had to split my 4400 and my 641. The 4400 was the hardest as it has a front loader and backhoe I had to remove first.

Ben,
What exactly do you mean when you write that the PTA clutch is frozen? Can you not put the pto in gear when the engine is running? Can you put it in gear with the engine not running? If you give these guys enough information, they'll be sure to help.
