3000 gas engine problem

Recently, my tractor has developed a problem. It starts and runs fine, but when I put a load on it, the engine starts misses for a couple seconds and then starts to produce some power, but still not up to normal standards. I haven't done any work to it recently, but have been using it quite a bit. There are no other signs of a problem with the engine. If I had to guess, I would say its ignition system related (points? timing advance?), but haven't been able to spend any time looking into it yet. Any ideas of where to start?
Thanks,
Jim

Jim, I would check the vacuum operated accelerator pump piston in the carb; possibly stuck, possibly some dirt in the pump inlet valve.

Of course, I'd always tune up the ignition system first, then go after the fuel system.

These engines always had a little tendency to bark while the governor was "opening up" the carb. The water heated inlet manifold does not heat up as much as an exhaust heated inlet manifold.
