861 two stage clutch- trans install?

I have replaced the clutch in my 861 and I am trying to reattach the trans to the engine.

I have screwed 4" long guide pins in the engine block for the transmission case to slide on. I can get the transmission to slide up to within 1/2" of the block and then it stops. I can tell that something is not lining up right.

I removed the transmission and took the clutch off the flywheel and tried to slide it onto the dual input shaft. It will go into place but only with a lot of shaking, pushing and bumping with a wood block. I assume that this is the problem because I cannot do all of the shaking and bumping when the clutch is bolted to the flywheel.

This has got to be the most frustrating clutch job I have ever done. I have replaced lots of automotive clutches but this is my first tractor job (and it is the two stage clutch to top it off). I am on the verge of breaking down in tears after spending 10 hours today trying to get this back together.

Does anyone have a trick or two up their sleeve that they'd like to share with me?

I had the same problem with my 861. After several frustrating attempts, I slid the clutch on the trans input shaft, brought the halves together. I had to lift the clutch slightly to get the shaft into the hole in the fly wheel. Then using long extensions and flex joints on my socket wrench, I could reach through the starter hole and the hole where the steering gear mounts and attach the clutch mounting bolts one at time rotating the flywheel to each hole.

Today I pulled the input shafts out of the tranny and confirmed that everything was lined up correctly. I ran a needle file through all of the splines in the clutch discs. A local tractor mechanic suggested putting a tiny bit of grease on the splines.

It went together on the first stab! What a relief.

Thanks for all of the help!

It sounds like the plates are out of alignment, like Bern said. However, it can be tricky to get the clutch to line up under the best of conditions. If either the engine or transmission have dropped slightly, it's not going to go together. Try to mate the two halves without the clutch installed; you can see if they are out of line. You will need a jack under both the oil pan and transmission so you can adjust them. (I assume you have a floor jack under the transmission and you're rolling the back half forward. If you just put blocking under the pan it probably dropped when you pulled out the bolts coupling the engine and trans.)

This clutch does not use a line-up tool. The centering is done on a jig like the one shown in the picture in another post. My hunch is that one of the discs have been knocked off center because the assembly was dropped or bumped hard. I think this because you say that the clutch went onto the tranny splines with a lot of effort.

I think the best thing you can do is find a jig like the one shown in the pic and get it re-centered. Once done, be careful about how you handle it until it is back together.

It is alot easier with two people. Make sure the gap between the engine and the tranny is the same at the top and the bottom. I have had success with one guy(big guy) wiggling\shaking the front end of the tractor while the other pushes in. I know you are not suppossed to use the bolts to pull it together, but once i get it close enough to get a bolt on each side started on each side I snug the bolts finger tight as we wiggle and shove the two halves together. That way when you take a break the two halves dont slide apart. When you get it back together tighten a couple of bolts. Go back and spin your rear PTO, Then engage your rear PTO and have someone step on the clutch and hold it. With the clutch in you should be able to spin the rear PTO--it will be harder to spin than it was before you engaged the PTO. If you can spin it with the clutch depressed and the PTO engaged then you know the PTO portion of the clutch is adjusted right and working. It sure beats putting it all back together and starting it up only to find out you have to split it apart again. Good luck.

awhtx,

Here's a page out of the Ford Shop Manual. It says, inpart:

"The Double Clutch Adjusting Fixture NDA-7502 has been developed to facilitate proper servicing of the double clutch. No attempt should be made to assemble or adjust the clutch unless this tool is used."

Are you using a clutch alignment tool?.One that aligns both clutch plates and the pilot shaft bearing. If not you need to.When you are certain everything lines turn the flywheel through the starter hole with a screwdriver while pushing the tractor together. It should go easily together this way."DO NOT PULL TOGETHER WITH BOLTS" this will damage the clutch plates.LATER.
