I was going back to look at a Late model 4000 when the owner got the battery charged to crank it up. Low and behold the fellow forgot to cover the exhaust and it has rained in it for about a month. It is locked up. The tractor appears to be in great shape, has power steering and sheet metal is excellent, also is showing 3400 hrs. The man says he bought the tractor along with other equipment about a month ago and it ran great then. What would be a fair offer for this tractor with info I have given the way it sits right now. Thanks.

BB

I worked on a 4000 industrial that had set for over a year full of water. There was water in the exh. manifold up to the muffler and the crankcase was full up to the dipstick hole. I pulled the plug on the crankcase first and got it emtied, and took off the exhaust manifold. Then I pulled the injectors. One cyl was clear full of water, and the other two had lots of water in them, but not full. A suction gun got some of the water out, and then dumped in some MMO and let it set for a day or two, drain plug out of the crankcase.
Installed a new battery, and bumped the starter. After a couple of bumps, the fan started to move about a 1/8th or 1/4 inch at each bump. Kept that up from time to time until the engine had turned over a couple of times. It finally broke completely loose and spun over nicely, blowing the rest of the water and rust out the injector holes. Squirted some more MMO in the holes, replaced the injectors and exh manifold, dumped oil in her, bled the system, and fired her up. Run like a million bucks. Starts good all the time, too. Doesn't smoke either.

That's what I'm talking about.....MMO.

Did a Farmall 300 Util for a guy wouldn't budge with the starter. Had to get on the rear wheels to get enough torque. Worked that wheel for 2 days to get it broken loose. Don't remember what I used to soften the rust in the engine.

Regardless, I cleaned everything up, redid the fluids, ignition, carb., fuel tank (varnish) and all (been neglected) and when he came to pick it up, he let it idle in the driveway 15 minutes before he loaded it. Never missed a lick, never coughed, just purred.

Guy running it today.

So it can be recoverable without open heart surgery...just depends on the particular circumstance. Like I said you're at risk, how much no one knows, but that is part of the fun of buying old iron..... ..... ....did I get a deal or not?

An inframe overhaul should cost in the neighborhood of $650. This is head work, new pistons and rings and connecting rod bearings. There is no labor involved in this, you have to furnish the labor. You will need to hone the cylinder walls. I did this on a 4610 last summer, it has essentially the same engine as the 4000.

How do you know it ran good a month ago?
Unless you really know this guy and can trust his word. It might not of run for years. Also what does run good mean? Ive had people tell me something ran good and it smoked pinged and knocked like crazy but it ran. Its all in the persons definition of run good! Not trying to discourage but at least knock the price down if you can not hear it run.

Good Luck!

To me a month is not a long time. You will have rust around the exhaust valves and if (sounds like) one was open, that piston will have a ring of rust to break loose.

Crankcase will have water in it (first thing out when you pull plug).

Plenty of posts in archives about favorite chemicals to blow into cylinders to free stuck piston.

Considering the age of the iron on this board, I'd bet that 80% of the tractors were stuck or near stuck at one time or another and came out of it running strong.

I'd feel him out for the best deal. After all, he was negligent and you are at risk. Make him pay....start low.
