I have an 861 that was rebuilt 500hrs ago before I bought it by a motor shop. I am getting what I think is a lot of blow-by out of the breather on the valve cover. this is making an oily mess down the side of the motor. The tractor has had 70+ lbs. oil pressure since I have owned it. Not sure if the guage is correct. Assuming the oil pressure is correct would that cause all the oil mess? Any other ideas? Thanks

Along with what txblu says, and what weight oil are you using? You might try using something heavier wt for a while to see if that makes a difference. I have found that 20w-50 sometimes makes a difference. Do you have access to a dyno? Best way to seat rings there is. Hook her up and let it work for an hour or two. However, if the cyls were improperly honed, or if honed at all, nothing will probably help.

Mine slobbers too. The only thing I can think of is that either the rings haven't seated or the overhaul did not include any cylinder work.

Blowby is simply compression chamber gasses which squeeze out of the combustion chamber during the power stroke. 2 ways to do that. 1, valve stems leaking, 2 rings not sealing (for whatever reason).

I think if the valve guides were the problem, you'd have a puff of smoke out of the tail pipe upon accelerating after a fair amount of idling.

Taken to the extreme, rings lead to oil consumption and consequently oil out the tail pipe. Dipstick shows oil consumption.

I wipe it up and go on as the tractor starts, runs, and operated fine otherwise.

A little steam and oil around the valve cover vent is normal, we bought a 861 new in 1958 and we overhauled it in 1975. It has allways had a little oil around the valve cover vent. you may want to make sure they put the steel wool type filter back under cover on side of valve cover, it's held on with a wing nut. If there is a big lot of oil being blowed out the drain holes in the head could be pluged not leting the oil drain back into the pan fast enough.
