I just bought a 1973 3400 diesel.I need to change the oil but I don't know the crank case capacity.also I can't get the 3 point to work . The tractor has been sitting for several years but every thing else seems to work .Is there a sequence that needs to be followed to make the three point work or could it be low on oil.

The old operators manuals state 8 Qts for engine oil capacity. However that was with the old 2-qt filter canister with replaceable element. The spin-on filter holds just over a Qt, so I marked my dip stick at about 7.2 Qts. I doubt you'd do harm with 8 Qts, that's probably what most people use.

As to the 3-pt hitch, it may just need to be bled of air. The pump is on the opposite side from the starter and has a plug you can remove to let air out. If it isn't dry (in which case you'd damage it by extended running), then it'll probably eventually work the air out itself if you leave the 3-pt control lever down so that the oil can circulate freely. The rear hyd. oil is the same that lubricates the rear end, there are a few gallons of it, you can check the oil level at a level plug near the rear axle, or maybe look inside the filler plug on top of the differential, behind the seat, with a flashlight.
