1.) What is a good motor oil for the 172 4cyl.? I have seen preferences for 15-40, like Rotella, but would like a good recommendation on what to use.

2.) Trans. - use NH's 134 ? ( forgot which designation is correct one )

3.) Rear Differential, 90 wt. or NH 134 ? Is it true that some fluids can react with parts in the diff., like bronze etc. ?

4.) What is the best way to check the condition of the front axle center pin / bushing ? I have a loader on mine, and have raised up the front end, I do see 3/16" of play between the bushing and the support bolted to the front of the engine block.

Did do a search, lot of reading, but any advice is greatly appreciated.... thanks !

1- You could use 15-40, 10-30, 10-40, 20-50, or straight 30, all heavy duty oils, either mineral or synthetic. Kinda depends what part of the country you are in and how cold it gets in the winter, etc. I have started using 20-50 synthetic in mine.
2-M-2C-134D is fine for the trans.
3-I use 134D in all three of my Fords all the way thru-Hyds, trans, diffy. No problems whatsoever.
4- Looks like you need a new bushing. A loader on this type of front axle isn't the best way to go.

Big thanks George, as I had it out, clearing, brushogging & even some 2 bottom plowing, so I decided since while it was hot, to at least change the motor oil, so I drained it as soon as I got back to the garage. The oil bath air filter; (non detergent would be best for the air filter I would think, as the contaminents need to settle out, not be suspended as with Det. oil)

I agree on the loader, I will need like a 4400 industrial, as I have a lot of use for a loader. Strangely enough, and I am amazed, this tractor has been worked pretty hard, by the looks of it, (I've only had it 1 year)but it's still in decent shape, it's a LPG model ( oil always looks clean ). I cannot complain though, I've done a lot of work with this loader, really surprised how it performed, having spent many years on earthmoving equipment, I expected it to be somewhat of a joke.

Being that center pin/bushing is what holds up the front end, I'll have to come up with a strong fix before the snow flies, will have to take it easy until then. Now I am curious as to how other people have rebuilt this assembly ! Time to get the manuals out & magnify the exploded view !

I have an early 4000, just like an 861, with a loader. The pivit pin on mine was worn and I replaced it. Soon the radiator fan was hitting the shroud. I took the front axel off and buildt up the top of the hole for the pivit pin (that had worn into an oblong shape) with parts of pipe welded in place. Seems to be holding up fine for now.
