Couple of engine questions:

1.) I have an LPG version of the above in the 850, and I can hear a knock at a low idle, but when running at a higher R.P.M. and or at running temperature when working hard it goes away, it seems to only do this when the throttle is set at an idle or a little higher. I'm not one to let an engine idle for long only when hot to cool and or if running anything with a turbo, for the same reason. It does not sound like a serious knock, like a rod, but for this particular motor, I was just wondering what could cause a sound like this, it's hard to diagnose something like this without obviously hearing it, but figured I'd check here anyways. The valve train seems quiet with a normal amount of tappet noise, hard to say if it could use a valve adjustment, but otherwise it runs strong, uses no oil, does not leak or burn it, and I'm under the impression it has not been too long since an overhaul, but my faith in the previous owners description is sketchy on the engine condition. None of the gauges are currently working & that I know is not a good thing, the wiring was a mess under the hood, live bare wires, bad connections, some idiot must have been in there hacking things up, including the gauges which don't look that old, except the tach, I'm gonna try & get the oil and temp guages working soon, as this is not a good thing to run with out them functioning.

2.) Coolant leak, after I shut it down, I get some coolant on the floor, I'm thinking that after the fan belt broke while brushogging on a hot day last year, it overheated, had no choice but to shut it down, possible head gasket leak ? No sign of anything in the oil, oil stays clean, mostly due to it being an LPG powered engine.

3.) It's obviously always wise to do an overhaul before a catastrophic failure on any motor, does anyone have an idea of what a ballpark cost would be to re-build a 172 4cyl. ?

Thanks again !

To do it right it would probably be around $1000 give or take a few 100. That would be new sleeves etc. As far as the knock with out an oil presure gauge you have no idea of whats up. Go to an auto parts store and by a guage and hook it up, not an eletrical one but one that hooks up with a line. That way you can tell what your preasure is if its low say around 15psi or lower when warm don't keep running it till you look the engine over good

I'm going to connect an oil pressure gauge immediately, see what the deal is, don't want to spin a bearing, the timing of these things always occur when you need your tractor ! LOL

The knock at idle that goes away as revs increase is probably a loose rocker arm shaft oil supply tube banging against the underneath of the rocker cover. Take off the rocker cover or the push rod cover on the right side, idle the engine and watch the tube. Each camshaft rotation, it gets a shot of oil through a passage in the center camshaft bearing, which is why it knocks in sync with the engine.
