Is there a specific shop manual for the SOS trans or aftermarket manual for understanding, troublexhooting and repairing the trans? I have ordered the Ford shop manual for my tractor ('62 881 Gas) but have not received it yet and wonder if there is something for the SOS specific that I should order?

Thanks

The S.O.S. transmission segment should be part of your Ford shop manual that you ordered. The manual Matt cited below is not correct for your tractor unless your transmission has been changed to the direct drive version.

The Ford Service Manual (40060090) has a complete section on repair of models 71 and 81 SOS. 40060090 also has the complete direct drive clutch supplement SE8175S1 for the later version of the transmission, like in the photo. Each section is about 70 pages. The manual in the photo has a different number--don't know what the difference is.

Primedia I&T FO-20 also covers both versions of the 4-cylinder SOS. It's not nearly as comprehensive as the Ford manual, but has good real world tips that make it well worth having.

The Ford Parts Catalog is a real time saver, and the exploded diagrams are good for understanding how the parts go together.

I have this manual on CD, got it off e-bay. Click on the link for a hard back version.
