I have 12 volts going into the solenoid. When I engage the start switch the solenoid clicks but there is no 12v at the output going to the starter. I'm thinking bad solenoid but when I put 12v directly on the starter terminal I get some sparks but no turning over. I have cleaned and tightened all battery, starter and solenoid wiring xcept battery ground (forgot it till now). I turned the rear work light on, hit the start switch figuring it would dim if all the connections to starter were ok but it burned bright when start switch engaged. One time during all this testing it turned over briefly. Your valued thoughts please. Thanks Bill Tom

First thoughts: Soleniod coil functioning, but the contacts are burnt and not providing current to the output post. Burnt solenoid caused from high curent draw by starter, as evidenced by no cranking when jumping starter directly.

Hey RickB thanks for the response. I picked up a new solenoid from our NH dealer today. Their thinking was the same as yours. I'll install it tomorrow and see what happens. Thanks again. Bill Tom

Hey Bill, If you just got sparks @ the starter motor, but no rotation of engine- I would look at the starter motor first. You may have a bad solenoid because of the heavy amp.draw of a bad starter motor. Bypassing the the solenoid switch, should have gotten the starter motor to spin the engine over.

Mark, Good point. I replaced the solenoid today and no change so your idea of the starter motor being bad sounds logical. Will post after I check it out. Thanks for your time and for trying to help. Bill

TAP THE SIDE OF THE STARTER WITH A HAMMER. IF THE BRUSHES ARE STICKING THAT MAY RESEAT THEM. IF NOT ,PULL THE STARTER, TRY PUTTING JUICE TO IT OUT OF THE ENGINE TO MAKE IT SPIN. IF IT WORKS YOU MAY HAVE A SIEZED ENGINE. IF NOT YOUR STARTER IS BAD
