Hi
I was backing up pulling a stump and I heard some clunking noises. Well the left front wheel started locking up. So I took it out of 4wd and it freed it. Then it just made a clunk like every revolution.

Well now its locking up in even 2wd. Any ideas what I am looking for to be wrong before I pull it apart?

If the noise is in the front assembly you ve probably snapped your axle inside the housing. We have a 4600 4x4 with a schindler front diff that had the same problem and we are still trying to find parts. We live in Australia.

You have no business trying to pull stumps with that little tractor, and not backwards with a 4-wheel drive. You are putting mega forces on that little front wheel drive system. You have probably done at least $1500 worth of damage. Equipment abuse is costly.

I know I messed up, but what should I look for as the problem? I was thinking about removing the whole front drive train, it appears when I have someone hold the other front wheel (not in 4wd) that its hopping over something, like makes a thud ever revolution of the gear.

You were probably looking at a bearing replacement at the first sign of trouble. But possibly more $$$ gears in there.

You kept using it???? Oh boy, who knows how many thousands $$$ it will be now. Man, you just don't mess with a 4wd front hub. Those parts in there are EXPENSIVE.

Park it & find out what is up. I'd be scared to drive my 1720 to the shed if it started making noises, much less keep using it. Perhaps it was the gears going bad to begin with and it woulda cost you a bundle anyhow, but man oh man why take away any doubt?

Its my dads tractor actually, and I told him not to use it. He kept using it needless to say. But this is a guy that has damaged 2 cars and took out a bunch of trees since he got the thing.
