3000 Ford power steering problem

A PS line on my 3000 Ford cracked and lost all of the fluid today. I continues to run it for about an hour moving big bales out of the bottom trying to beat the rain. My wife went to get replacement lines and apparently the old steel lines are no longer available, so I just finished replacing both of them with new rubber lines. The PS was working fine before the line broke. I replaced the lines, filled the reservoir, and tried to purge the air per directions in the manual, but the PS doesn't work. Now comes the dumb question, does it make a difference which line goes where on the cylinder? That is the only reason I can think of for it not working. The lines are a pain to change so I thought I would ask before switching them.

You ought to check the output on the pump with a pressure guage. Get a $10.00 one from northern tools that reads up to 2000psi or more. The pump should put out 700psi if memory serves. I ran mine at 900 with no problems. The pump is easily rebuilt.

yes,, if you cross the lines, one cyl will fight the other cyl..

however.. if you ran the tractor with the pump dry, you probably ruined the power steering pump.. they can never be run dry or the pump will over heat and damage itself.. check your lines first, but then suspect the pump next.. hth.. bill
