If the starter got hot while trying to start it your relay may have been bad but it is hard to tell. It may have been stuck in the start position. You do not give enough info for me to deturmine that. Any way with a new relay if the starter gets warm and does not spin at all the windings in the starter are shorted out or it is locked in the ring gear and jammed. Time for a rebuild. Have it wound to 12V's while you are at it since you now have a 12V system.

To test a starter you take a known good battery and a set of jumper cables. It is best done with the starter off that way you know it is not locked in the ring gear and jammed. Hook one cable to the starter bolt where the wire hooks and the other cable to the starter case. It should spin.
