850 hydraulic oil migrating to rear end?

I have a 1955 850. I decided to change the oil in the rear end and the hyraulic reservoir. When I drained them, I was surprised to find that the rear and had almost five gallons of oil in it and the hyd. reservoir much less than three gallons (I think they are both supposed to have 12 quarts). After I put twelve quarts in each, I operated the tractor a few times and then re-checked the levels. Sure enough, the rear end is overfilled and the hydraulic fluid is low. I have an older friend who experienced this with his 860. He has had it for many years and remedied the problem by connecting the two reservoirs with some tubing, so that they are always at the same level. Is my problem common? Is my friend's solution advisable?

Remove the round side inspection cover with an implement safely attached and see if the oil squirts back to the rear ring gear housing when the 3 point give corrections at the lift piston cylinder and valve area when running and oil warmed up, if ok then shaft seals need replaced, new ones are half width of the old leather ones and can be installed with one facing each direction.

There is a seal between the two sections that the PTO shaft passes through that is where yor fluid is transferring. Grab a service manual and your favorite beverage and have at it....

Hey Mark, I spend so much of my time with a wrench in my hand it's just second nature, you know you're the same way, when it's go to be fixed just do it. Dave

Bill Boquist;

Our 850 would do that but very slow. We would just drain some oil out of the rear end and put it in the hyd. housing.

I'd tend to do that too. I'm lazy and won't go into it if I don't have to. Besides the only thing it hurts for your diff to have a lot of fluid is testing the axle and pto shaft seals.

Best I can tell, the hyd sump level and full plug on my machines are at about the same elevation..... .and since the big boys (NH)say that 134 oil can be used in the diff (with a slight increase in wear) so what. If the diff wasn't worn out with GL-1 in 50 years of real service, I'm not going to kill it hobby farmin for 10 or so..... guess I'll live that long.
