I'm having problems shifting from forward to reverse ever since I added M2C48A Trans/Hydraulic fluid to my transmission.

My owners manual says it should be M2C41A same as the power steering. However, my New Holland dealer says that's not available and that the M2C48A is what is required. I think they are wrong.

Anybody have one of these backhoes that can help I'd really appreciate

Hello again Bob!

Just remembered that I called several New Holland dealers, and each had entirely different opinions as to what oil to put where. One dealer even told me to use John Deere oil!!!!
But this one dealer cheked his service manuals from New Holland Head Office, and it sadid that for the Ford 550 backhoe, you can use AMBRA 134 MultiG in ALL the systems. I found this hard to believe at first, but I trusted him and switched out all the previous oils to MultiG 134. It's easier for me since I only have to get one type of oil. The stuff has been in my 1976 550 for 5 months now, and it is really great! The machine seems to travel faster! Andrew

Thanks Andrew!

I switched to New Holland's F200 and I believe that resolved my problems. The F200 is for extreme cold conditions and I live at 5,600 feet so I thought the lower viscosity might help. It did.

I still have some minor shifting issues in that it sometimes falls out of foward. Linkage seems awful sloppy. Also, I wish there was more power. Seems like there would be more with a regular clutch. Torque Conveter must slip in low when I'm gunning it I'd like to see the tires slip instead it just sits there when I encouter a heavy push.

Probably won't use it much until spring. I've got it chained but I suspect it will become harder and harder to start.

Thanks again,

Bob

Great to hear that everything worked out Bob!
I too live in a cold climate. I'm here in Montreal, Canada. It gets down to (-) 40 F sometimes here in February. This will be my first winter with my 76 Ford 550. I have a block heater on mine, so I am going to see if the thing will start up for me in February. Our backhoes have that preheat function on the ignition too. If it starts for me in February, I will be amazed!
You are right-there seems to be a lack of drive power in the transmission especially when you are using the front loader hydraulics. The machine has poor "ramming speed and power" when attacking large piles in front of you.
My dream machine is to one day have a John Deere 410G, or the Cadillac of Backhoes, the Caterpillar 416. That thing could move a building!!!
Glad to hear your new fluid is working well!
Andrew

Hello Bob!

I also have 1976 Ford 550 Backhoe with Power reversing transmission. I know that my manual says it needs M2C41A in the transmission, but my New Holland dealer insists that I use New Holland AMBRA 134 MultiG oil in ALL the systems. So that"s what I did. I have the AMBRA multiG 134 in my transmission case, the hydraulic fluid tank, and my rear axle, and also for the power steering.
So far everything is working incredibly well.
Hope this helps!
Andrew
