About a month ago the starter would infrequently not "kick in" to turn the motor. The starter would turn but nothing would happen. It has gotten much worse and now I have to push the button probably 15 - 20 times to get it to kick in and crank the engine. I took the starter out and checked the bendix and see no broken spring or anything else wrong. When I turn the bendix by hand it grabs the shaft as it is suppose to. I put it back in and it still does the same thing. I checked the flywheel and the gear is attached solid to the wheel. Am I overlooking something on the bendix or could it be something else. It has plenty of battery power as it has been converted to 12 volt. The starter is getting plenty of fire, it just is not kicking in to turn the motor over. Thanks.

As you've discovered, starters sometimes crank great but throw badly or not at all. If you test the starter with it off the tractor, you may see that this is the problem. It could be that the drive is dry or the lube used isn't light enough to allow a good throw. Otherwise, a good auto electric shop should be able to fix it or advise you how to.

Most likely you need to replace the ring gear on the flywheel, even though it's only 45 years old. You might not have any teeth missing, but they're probably pretty well worn.

This isn't too bad of a job, if you don't mind splitting the tractor yourself. Once you have the flywheel off, any automotive machine shop can remove and replace the ring gear. I think the gear is about ten bucks at your New Holland dealer.
