I am thinking on installing a Electronic Ignition on my 8N does any one know of any problems or glitches and does it help with starting problems. This is a front mount distributer and it would be nice to not have to change points.

Thanks e-mail me with any Info you might have on this Abrown@weber.k12.ut.us

I have the kit from pertronix and would sell it to you if interested. kit came with the shaft bracket drilled off-center and had to wait on new one (1week) finally installed kit and it was so tight it took pliers to turn the Dist. shaft! I installed it any how and it would not start. I clean and replaced all wiring conections in the Ignition circuit (soldered all connecters) and still would not start. bypassed ballest resistor,(bad idea)and it ran for 3hrs before melting the coil and frying the Ign. module. Pertonix replaced
kit under warranty and I went back to points.
1949 8N 6V Pos gnd. buyer beware!!!!!

Go over to the n board and hail Dell (WA). He's the self appointed sparkey meister and can answer most any question about that tractor, especially sparkey questions.

I have Pertronix on my '54 TO-30. It starts quick and idles smooth and no points to fuss with. It should be a really good deal on an 8N front mount. Genessee Products makes them for that application I believe. I believe they are only available for 12 V negative ground electrical systems but check with Genessee be caus e they may be available with 6V positive ground.

In my experience, if you are going to stay with 6 volts, don't go with electronic ign. Unless conditions are perfect, there isn't enough voltage to fire the module while cranking. Been there, done that, and went back to points.

12 volts works okay, tho.

here's a thought: Why not use the points to trigger a PNP transistor tied to ground on the collector side, and to the coil on the emitter side. Then your points would only fire the transistor, without carrying too much current and thereby reduce the arcing in the process. I know Genesee makes a fully electronic kit for the side dist 8Ns, not sure about frt dist. If the points only wore out every 10 years or so, would that be good enough?

I may try this on my 1954 Ford Custom one of these days. Someone else at home exercised her right to 'community property realignment' and I no longer have my 9N
