My father and I are stumped. We are in the process of converting a 1955 Ford 900 Gas from 6 volt to 12 volt. Thats not the problem though. Our problem is we would like to also switch it from Positive ground to negative ground. Because we are using a negative ground alternator to replace the old worn out generator. We have burnt up one starter already trying to figure it out. If anyone has any tips, knowledge, or advice please e-mail me. Every bit of information we can get will help.

B and G,
On a positive ground system the - terminal on
the coil is hooked to the ignition switch and the + terminal is hooked to the points in the distributor. A negative ground system is the opposite with the
+ to ignition and - to points, that is the only difference between the two systems. It will run ok hooked up backwards with just a small loss of power.

This wire and the ammeter wires both need to be reversed, nothing else is affected. The only thing the ammeter will do if not reversed is read backwards, no big deal.

Your starter problems have nothing with pos or neg ground, you must be shorting it out somehow or running it too long on 12v, it was designed for 6v so shouldn't be over used.

If you are using a single wire alternator that part is easy. If you are using the older Delco 3 wire I can tell you how to hook it up.

I assume you aren't trying to use the old generator voltage regulator, it won't work, throw it away.

Any I have worked on I have used the 6 volt starter+ solinode and made them neg ground. But if this isn't working you ,you could get the starter for a 801 diesel thy are 12 volt neg ground from factory take your old one to match with. I also had a guy tell me that a stsrter out of a late 50 early 60 v8 car starter will work. Hope this helped
