B and G, On a positive ground system the - terminal on the coil is hooked to the ignition switch and the + terminal is hooked to the points in the distributor. A negative ground system is the opposite with the + to ignition and - to points, that is the only difference between the two systems. It will run ok hooked up backwards with just a small loss of power. This wire and the ammeter wires both need to be reversed, nothing else is affected. The only thing the ammeter will do if not reversed is read backwards, no big deal. Your starter problems have nothing with pos or neg ground, you must be shorting it out somehow or running it too long on 12v, it was designed for 6v so shouldn't be over used. If you are using a single wire alternator that part is easy. If you are using the older Delco 3 wire I can tell you how to hook it up. I assume you aren't trying to use the old generator voltage regulator, it won't work, throw it away.
