I took someone's advice and replaced the o-ring around the valve stem. NO LEAKS!
And it's not hard to do.
I took a dremel tool and cut two flat spots on the retaining pin and used those spots to pull the pin with vise-grips.
Then backed out the valve stem completely. The old rubber seal was completely shot and fell to pieces. I bought some buna-n O-rings from mcmaster carr and put one in. Put it back together and pushed the old pin back in. It works great. I had to buy 100 o-rings so I have a whole bunch left over. The ones I bought were "dash 017", mcmaster carr p/n 9452k71 for $3.31 plus shipping. Ordering 100 from McMaster was easier for me than traveling to the seal distributor. Sure seems better than paying $48 for another valve and its real nice not to have fuel dripping on the engine.

I assume that you are talking about the screw-type shut-off valve. Does anyone have any advise as to repairing the very poorly made lever-type shut-off valve as used on 800 series tractors?

I've been successfull in pulling that retaining pin out with a knife worked under the end. I found O rings at a motorcyle shop that were the correct size. Fixed several of them this way.

Yes it is easy and works great.

I ground the head off the retainer pin so I could see the size of pin. I then drilled the pin out and installed a o-ring I had left over from a hyd cover rebuild kit.
I then put a #12 screw in the pin hole.
Total cost was $.03 for the screw.

Someone sure had a good idea when they came up with this. The $47.97 I saved on this one item from reading this site will pay for 6 years of my voluntary subscriber fee.
That reminds me Xmas is the time of year I pay the fee. If you want to subscribe but do not know how look Here
Best $8.00 I spend all year.
Ok thats my sales pitch for today.

Yes. Doesn't stink up the place and it's safe.....your old iron shouldn't go up in smoke.
