How do I determine what temp thermostat I should use in my Ford 4000 gas? Part catalogs are showing different temp raings all for the same tractor.

Matt

Hi Matt,

The higher temp stat is for winter operation while the lower temp stats are for moderate to hot climate/summer operation. If the tractor is parked all winter, then you should go with the cooler to mid range stat. If you use it in the winter, go with the 180 F. These stats are made in UK, and the opening temp is stamped on them in degrees C. I think the cool one is 68, and I know the hot one is 80 C. I run the 80 C in my 7710, as she just won't pull with a cooler stat. You would probably be safer with the mid-range on the 4000 though, as they don't have the cooling capacity to hold steady at 80 C while working hard in warmer temperatures. Good luck.

Rod

If you have a shop manual or an owners manual, they can probably tell you. If not, the best source in Ford/New Holland (or what ever they call themselves now!) dealer. Per the owners manual, my '82 Ford 4610 uses a 180 oF thermostat that is supposed to fully open at 203 oF. I would imagine most thermostats spec would be the same, 180 oF .

Sort of depends on what you want and what you plan on doing. The few I have with them they are 160s but I run my tractors in the summer and park them in the winter

Last winter we were discussing this subject (herein). I had 160's in all mine but thought it would be "smart" to use a higher one in my diesels. Have a 2000D which was running super on it's 160. I put in a 180 (did nothing else) and it ran like crap after warming up. Instead of the temp gauge working the 160-175 area, it was working the 180-200 area.

Put the old one (160) back in and tractor settled down and purred like a kitten as before.

Don't know what the extra temp did but the engine didn't like it.
