I just bought a 4000 diesel tractor, and power steering fluid is coming out the top of the shaft. I pulled it apart and replaced the seal in the column. Everything inside looked ok, the seal really didn't look like it needed replaced. Same problem. Also, when you turn it left, the steering wheel is rising up, like the shaft is coming out of the box. I replaced a cone shaped washer that was broke wwhile I had the column apart. I'm a fairly decent mechanic, but know nothing about these P/S units. Any help would be appricated. Happy T day!

Bob, Your broken bevel washer tells me you have the same steering as my 861, not industrial type. That is 801 thru 4000. Someone in the past has used this tractor without P.S. which creates to much stress on the control body. It is in my mind it is the opposite of manual steering. The gear box tells the control valve what to do. With the upper housing off and the steering wheel on, gently move the wheel back and forth while watching the shaft, it will move up an down slightly. Thats how the valve plungers change which cyl. the fluid goes to telling the gear box what to do. You should replace your blown seals (o-rings). Take pictures while you take off lines or mark them where they go.Also be very careful with the control body , don"t lose any balls, springs, plungers etc. If your shaft threads are messed up, post back. A new shaft or used is $$$$ Richard

You will have to remove the steering shaft from the column and see if you can find out why it is moving up and down in the steering box that is the cause of your leak. There is a rectangular shaped gear on the bottom of the column and it is stuck causing the movement. Worst case senario is you are in for a shaft change.
