Turns out that the seriel number on that old Ford is 41301 S. What does the S mean? It also has a wierd trans mission. It looks like a basic four speed but has no reverse. Reverse is accessed by use of a lever on the left side of the transmission that makes all four gears reverse. Onlything is that if you turn too sharp the steering arm knocks it our of gear. Is this a factory installed item or a home made job?

Hello Bob Lee, The 41301S is Light Duty Industrial hence the non-adjustable front axle it has Three point and pto which many do not, it is a 1963 or 1964 depending on which number you added in the serial, it should be 5 digits not 6. The four speed should have reverse just like any other four speed and when you use the reversing trans you go foward in reverse unless someone installed a lockout kit which the Forklift transmissions have and tractors do not have. It is factory installed that is what the S means in the model number but someone may have butchered up the original linkage allowing it to hit he steering arm. Thanks Tony Jacobs

The 41301 S number is your model number. The S means it was factory equipped with a Sherman auxiliary transmission. You happen to have the fairly uncommon reversing Sherman, also referred to as a shuttle transmission. It simply makes all four gears work in either direction, forward or reverse. I believe it was more commonly found on tractors that were converted to forklift duty.

The other kinds of shermans were: Step-up: gives you an overdrive for any gear
Step-down: gives you an underdrive for any gear
Combination: gives both an overdrive and underdrive for any gear.
