Could you please tell me what older, smaller, Fords have an "independent P.T.O."

Regards

Let's cut to the basics here. The earlier year the tractor the less likely you are to find the Ford model with independent PTO.
Question: What were Ford's first years and models when independent PTO was standard across the line, that is you didn't have to pay extra for it; if the tractor had PTO it was guaranteed to be independent??
It seems when you find a hundred series or early thousand series with independent or live the owner thinks he has the crown jewels and asks more money for it. Personally I would look for a late 1970's tractor.

Any Select-o-speed model built prior to 1965. Or any 3000 S-O-S, or any 4000 series or 5000 series 1965 or later. These tractors would have ALL had IPTO.

My late '90s 1720 New Holland tractor has live pto, not independent.

Don't know there is an across the board time they _all_ have independent pto. Some JD tractors from the '90s don't have live pto, I believe same with the other colors.

I guess you are right if you include tractors like the 1720, but that is really a lighter compact utility made in Japan, isn't it? I was asking more about the the full size tractors such as the 3000/3600/3610, 4000/4600/4610SU etc. that were manufactured by Ford in the US or England.

Yea, I know. It's all splitting hairs. :) The 1720's & the like are all assembled in the USA, so they are as much USA as any of the tractors you mention. Plus, the one's you mention are not 'real' tractors out here in farm country, where my 7700 85hp tractor is considered a small utility for pulling wagons around, not real work. It's all relative! :) Then, I use my 'light compact' tractor to pull the corn planter & plant over 100 acres of corn a year, & all my bean spraying. So, just how do we define things????? :) :) :)

In another message, we find the guy wants to maintain 4 acres, so a 1720 would be a little large for him IMHO. The confusion is his hangup on 'independent' pto, when 'live' should be plenty good for his uses, but he's not telling why, so.....

Enjoyed your messages, mine are light-hearted if that isn't clear. :)

Yeah, I hear what you're saying. I've heard guys refer to anything less than 90HP as a "yard tractor", I guess meaning it only does chores around the barnyard. It seems like you're doing well with the 1720. Does it have front-wheel assist? Economy wise it really doesn't pay to use a tractor bigger than necessary, so if you can do the planting and spraying with the 1720 that is great and probably uses less fuel.

I guy like this starting out with just one tractor though, it is sometimes better to go a little bigger if you don't know where you're headed. I didn't recheck the other posts, but he may have mentioned loader also.
Have a Happy New Year!

I got the little fellow (well, my wife bought it if you check some of the other forums... ;) for chores around the place, 4wd, loader, had under 500 hours on it.

I used to plant with the 4 row JD 7000 planter with the Ford 7700 on it, but 85 hp was a lot, that tractor has fluid in all tires so weights a ton, and it has a cab which I just hate for planting operations.

All my other gas tractors would be better sized for the planter, but all have hydraulic issues, would not lift the planter when full of seed & fert. Plus the 6v tractors & 12v monitor....

So, I tried the 1720 on it when I got it, & planted that way for 2 years now. I travel just a bit too slow, but my yields jumped up 10 bu an acre, so that tells me something!

It is kind of humorous to plant corn with my smallest tractor, and then plant beans with the 15 row bean bar on my biggest 140 hp tractor..... I'm sure the neighbors are talking, but at least this way I know why! :)

You understand the difference between 'live' & 'independent' - the folks below are right on the independent part.

660 would probably be the first smallest with 'live', as all the x6x numbered Fords of that era?

The smallest Ford I know of that had independent PTO say before early 1970's and with out the SOS trans is a 5000 8 speed. But I do not think you would consider that a small tractor.

That is "live" PTO, not independent. You can't start the PTO on a tractor with live PTO without stopping travel. With independent PTO , you can. As answered, the 671, 681, 871, 881 were the first Fords with IPTO. Following them were the 4cyl 2000 and 4000 SOS. Then all 3 cyl 4000's, 3000 SOS, and all 5000's had IPTO.

on the 2600, 3600, 4600, 5600, 6600 series, the independent pto is identified by the pto lever being "bent out to the outside", looks like someone put a torch to it and bent it to make it easier to access.

Definitely got me there. Notice I ended my statement with a question. Mainly 'cause I know john in la knows a heckuva lot more about these than I do. I was really curious why he didn't include these, so it was really a "shoot my mouth off so's somebody will straighten me out" comment.
Thanks,
Dave

64x not live. 66x live but not independent. Failure to make that distinction was my mistake above.
