It is valvetrain trivia time.

My new (to me) 901 ran rough, so after a tune up and such I decide to adjust the valves.1,3,4 looked ok but #2 exhaust (i think) is missing somthing. Not sure how/why it was not there when I pulled the valve cover off.

close up

Can you all see what is missing in the pictures?????

You have a Roto cap. The part that will blow your mind is that they are actually set (adjusted ) before the head is assembled. They are designed to have a set clearance between the keepers and the end of the valve stem. I checked in one of my older NAPA catalogs. Of course you can have some engines with rotor caps and some with positive rotators. You might want to check and see if a NAPA 216-2022 is a roto cap or a rotator. You can not interchange them. Questions?

Would really like to have some related info.
1. How long have you had the tractor?
2. What kind of oil do you use?
3. Hours on the tractor?
4. History of the tractor; uses, number owners, etc.
5. Who has worked on the tractor?
6. Are you rebuilding, or just troubleshooting?
Thanks, Tom

Missing valve rotator cap in reply to 961powermaster, 12-28-2004 18:10:51
Yup #2 exhaust is missing the rotator cap. Any one know how it could have gotten lost.
Called the newholland dealer 32miles to the north, they don't have one,$7 to get one. Then I call the dealer 41 miles the the south nope they dont have one $7 to get it.

Any one know where I can order valve parts for the 172cid engine online

Thanks

Notice where that rocker arm is contacting the spring retainer. Not a good thing. You should have a rotator if that is number two exhaust. From the front of the engine the valve order will be E-I-I-E-E-I-I- E. You are going to run the risk of bumping the spring retainer and letting the retainers (valve keepers) work out and then the valve could fall down on top of the piston. Questions? You can find me on the Oliver page if you do have questions. When I worked on the machine shop side I do not know if we sold the cap seperate or not.

Mabey? If we are looking at valves for 1 & 2, you have a worn intake valve on the #1 (should be a stub sticking up, not a cap). If we are looking at 2 & 3 your missing the cap for the #2 exghaust.

They should all have a cap on the exhaust valve only, you might be fine, look again.

Are you sure it's the exhaust valve? These engines use a rotator on the exhaust valves only. I think it's a hardened cap that keeps the stem from damage. It must be heat related because they only use them on the exhaust valves.
How did you post the pictures? In simple terms please, computer speak goes over my head. tim

The purpose of the rotator cap is to "rotate" the exhaust valve so it does not contact the seat in the same spot every time. This extends the life of the valve and reduces burnt valve occurrences. I am trying desperately right now to find two of these caps. I did not realize they were on there when I took my head to the car wash to degrease it. Now I can't find a source for JUST these caps. If you find a source, please post it up.

Good luck,
Dan
