SOS not engaging in 4th through -

I just want to better understand how the SOS may or may not work. Sometimes the SOS on my 59 871 will not move through 4th through the rest of the gears after I shift from gears 1-3 whiler moving forward etc. It seems to keep moving at the lower gears though. Sometimes it won"t move when I put it in reverse after moving in forward gears until I stop and put it in Park and then shift through the gears again.

Today the tractor didn"t have a good chance to warm up and I was wondering if it was sluggish and and had the problem because I didn"t give the juices time to boil in er.

I changed the transmission fluid and filter last year and it has about 40 hours on the new fluid so it should be fine. The cable is adjusted just fine too.

About 95% of the time this tractor is a charm but I was a wondering if I may have some sticking valves? or if I need to dig into this. It"s not really a problem yet...should I be concerned?

Your thoughts?

Bill

Quite possible it is a sticking valve, being the missed shifts are not consistent. However, I would check the band adjustment first. How did the oil you drained out look? Did it look pretty bad- dark, frothy, full of silvery or coppery metallic particles, or lots of sediment in the bottom of the case? I worked on a SOS a while back that wouldn't shift right, sorta like yours is doing, and I ended up changing oil twice in a row. That is what it took to clean up the valves and stuff, and it shifts just fine now.
Also, use NH 134 oil, not an equivalent, it will make a big difference in how it shifts and how smooth it will shift. I found this out the hard way, on my 4000. BTW, when you changed the oil, did you change the filter?

Hope some of this helps.

George

Actually the oil looked very clean when I changed it. And the bottom of the case, (from what I can tell from the cover removed looked very clean too. I changed the filter too. It makes sense to run clean oil through a clean filter. The equivalent I used was a Pennzoil product recommended by Tony Jacobs. I trust Tony's expertiese.

There was no sediment or any metallic dust or shavings in the oil or case.

It sounds like it is minor anyhow...possbly sticking valves on occasion...or a slight band adjustment.

I like to run the tractor through the 10 gears on occasion down the road just to keep the valves for all gears slippery inside.

Is that a good idea?

Billy, what kind of fluid did you put in the SOS last year? Do you have the Ford Repair Manual? If not better get it.
