A slow steady leak to the ground sounds like the piston o-ring or other o-ring, the safety valve, a leaking unloading valve plug, or maybe, the control valve. Pull the side cover off with the lift up and the engine off and see where the leak is coming from. If the leak from the o-ring from the back of the piston housing, replace that and do not touch anything else, other than replacing all o-rings and checking the cam follower pin. If the leak is from the front of the unit, then it is probably one of the valve. I would check the check valve first. The check valve is a simple steel ball that can be accessed without removing the heavy lift cover. Replace it in any event as it is only 50 cents at any hardware store. The check valve seat is a major pain to remove as you will need to remove the cover and obtain or make a special puller to access the seat. See the manual. Try the new steel ball first. The last thing I would suspect is the control valve and bushing. In any event, the bushing can be difficult to remove. It can be pressed or hammered out but make sure that the valve is pulled first, that you do not score or damage the interior of the unit, and that you replace the bushing with the same color bushing. Valve and bushing is around $55. The safety valve is accessed from the top of the lift cover and only the cover plate needs to be removed. I would replace this if the orings, check valve replacements do not fix the problem. $50 part. The unloading valve ring should only be replaced if you are having problems with the unit sticking in the up or down position. It will not usually cause a leak down. The unloading valve plug, however, will allow a leak down if it is worn and fluid is allowed to escape around it. The plug is only a press fit in. Replace the plug with the next size larger if need be. Good luck and keep us posted.
