Both the ring and pinion are pitted pretty bad from water that had accumulated in the rear end. I definately will replace the tapered bearings but can anyone tell me if i can get away with just cleaning up the ring and pinion and reusing them? I know this would be unacceptable in a car but since the tractor wont be going very fast I hate the thought of spending $450 for a new set. Anyone have a solution?

Thanks ~HB~ for your quick response and advice. You are right about it being 50yrs old and not perfect. I have rebuilt or replaced the engine, trans. and the sherman trans. The rear end was cracked and the pinion boss broken out. Someone really abused this tractor and its driving me to the poor house trying to repair it. Luckily the gears in the rear end survived. Now if only I could find a good used housing cheap.

Replace your bearings and use the ring gear & pinion you have. You will be OK.

Remember, your tractor is over 50 years old. The ring gear & pinion are probably not the only things that are not exactly perfect.
