Funny running 960

All,
I have a '55 960. It generally runs great. I have converted to 12V electrics and electronic ignition. It starts right up.

The problem comes occasionally during work. A couple of hours into Brush cutting, or an hour into snow plowing, the engine will start to surge.

I have to stop doing whatever I'm doing and "follow" the surges with the choke to keep it from stalling. A couple of minutes of this and the surging stops and it runs as good as ever until the work is done.

I doesn't seem to be weather or temperature dependent, and it doesn't do it all of the time.

Changing the carb needle settings doesn't do anything. Adusting the throttle...nothing. Removing the gas cap...nothing.

Any ideas?

Thanks.
Bob

Check for water in sediment bowl/carb bowl. One bead of water will stop up a jet, by choking you will force that bead to suck through the jet and it will be OK for a while. Condensation is always a factor this time of year. And always catch the fuel in a clear container and inspect for water and dirt.
I'm a Honda small engine dealer here in Florida and I do a lot of engine service because of water in fuel.

Bob,

Had a similar problem once. Turned out to be a clogged screen in the gas tank itself. Remove the shut-off valve and it is attached. Also, make sure your gas cap is vented. Might be pressure-locking.

Good Luck!

You might check your fuel shut off valve. If you have the plunger type, it might be partially closed. Had the same problem last fall plowing with my 860.
