Folks, What is the best way to solve hydraulic problems with a Jubilee/NAA. I bought this basket case tractor that has NO pump. What are my options?

Bob - One word of caution if you install a piston pump in place of a vane pump. If you go to the piston pump, you will need to insure the oil line fitting coming from the engine block does not interfer with the pump housing when you mount the pump. May have to grind some clearance in pump body or perhaps tap the fitting deeper into the block. The piston pump is longer than the vane pump and failing to insure clearance may break off the ears of the pump where it bolts to the engine. I bolted my pump up loosely and then used a feeler gage behind the pump and the oil fitting to be sure it wasn't hitting before tightening down the bolts. Then rechecked again after it was all buttoned down.

The Jubilee came originally with a Vickers Vane pump. Ford quit installing the vane pump in late 1955 (starting with Hundred series s/n 66849) and instead installed a piston pump. History has shown the piston pump to be more reliable. Many Jubilee's are in operation with a piston pump replacement. Since your Jube has NO pump you probably need to start looking for a piston pump. Does your tractor still have the hydraulic lines that attach to the pump?

I see used piston pumps on ebay from time to time. They usually sell for $350 to $500.

Zane Sherman sells a system that can replace the stock Ford hydraulic pump with a pump driven from the fan belt. He designed the system to give live hydraulics to 9N 2N and 8N, but he says it can also serve to replace a bad hydraulic pump on a Jubilee. He calls it the Live Thang. Check the link and contact Zane for more info.

The long and short of the story is I have looked
at the piston pumps on two of my other tractors
and while it appears that the piston pump will
physically bolt to the tractor, the hydraulic
lines will not fit the pump as configured. Are
lines available that will retrofit to allow the
installation of the piston pump or would I be better off trying to find an original vane pump?

The vane-to-piston pump conversion was rather common, even when these tractors were being serviced by Ford, because of the superior design of the piston pump and the priming problems inherent in the vane style pump. Ford actually re-designed the hydraulic lines from the bottom of the pump to the bottom of the hydraulic chamber to accommodate this common conversion.

I posted a link to one being sold on eBay right now. I was going to buy it, but the price plus shipping was a little more than I wanted to spend.

Good luck,
Dan

Dan, I replaced my lines, old ones are ugly but work fine. Interested?
