I recently pucchased a '54 Naa in very rough condition. I decided to start it before attempting it's restoration. Was actually easy to
start after doing all the necessary things you
expect to do to a tractor that had been sitting
(outside) for nearly a decade and a half. The
tractor is carrying 40+ lbs. of oil pressure. It
is making a noise that appears to be localized
at the right front of the engine but only at idle. Just off idle the noise lessens and at full
song it is completely absent. I'm suspecting that
maybe the cam is walking. Please share your
thoughts. Thanks, Bob

I would replace the timing gears. $50 before they break $500 after.

Bob, try using a mechanics stethoscope to pinpoint the exact location of the noise. The old method was to use a long screwdriver with the handle end in your ear and the blade end to the engine but the stethoscope method is much more accurate. I would also check the water pump, governor, and anything driven off the engine. Also consider it might be a loose wrist pin or a broken ring. Take a compression test to see if all cylinders are uniform. Unknown noises can drive you nuts. Hope this helps and good luck.

Guess I should have expounded further. I did a
compression check (dry) prior to startup. Results:
#1- 105lbs
#2- 108lbs
#3- 110lbs
#4- 105lbs
Used the percussion test and determined that the
noise is in the lower right of the engine.
Dropped the belt to eliminate engine driven accessories.Even removed the hydraulic pump to
eliminate the possibility that the noise was being transferred through the cam.
Engine runs good and level, idles at 450 rpm.
Does not have the heavy knock associated with
bearing wear, just an annoying rhythmic knock, not
especially loud but very noticible.

Take a look at your timing gears, there is a good chance that they have flat spots in them, Ford timing gears wear in 3 spots right where the holes are

Thanks for the responses guys. I'm going to tear
down the front of the engine and check it out.
