Looking at a 4600 with loader

I've been learning a lot on this web site and am grateful to all of you who have been so willing to share your knowledge and experience. My last tractors were a Ford 8N and a Ford 600 and they were new when my family had them (I think I'm dating myself, but so be it). Been in the city for the last 25 years so my wife could have her profession but it's my turn now. We've got 40 acres and will be going back to the style of small farming done before WW II. From everything I've read, a diesel 4600 with a loader should meet my needs.

Here's what I'm looking at this weekend. 1980 Ford diesel 4600 with a Ford loader, lever control, fully hydraulic with down pressure. Tractor has 2600 hours and 90% rubber front and back. Maintenance records back 10 years, sheet metal in good shape, no bad dings or missing parts. He is firm at $7250, selling because he's retiring and his son has a newer tractor and doesn't need two. From what I've seen that price seems more than fair if the equipment is as he describes it. Am I correct about that?

I would appreciate any and all suggestions from those of you familiar with this model tractor as to things I should check out and look at. What would be a deal breaker at that price? What paces should I put the machine through? Should I insist on a trip to the dealer for a checkout and if so what is the proper etiquette involved in setting that up? Last time I dealt with buying a tractor I was 16 years old and was strictly a spectator?

It's great feeling of security to know that I've got a community like this to come to if I should have questions or problems.

The only thing thats really wrong with the X600 serious is the PTO brake slips. I would definatly go with it though.

Sounds like a great price, especially considering the hours (if real and not after a roll over). I just bought a 4600 without loader with 6000hrs and no wrenches on anything. Everything works fine. Paid $6200 and had to fix nothing. Thought it was a fair price. That says your loader is only $1500 bucks which is a buy.

I like the tractor as a mid sized having the 2000 early Ford, 3000 and a couple of Deeres in the higher hp.

I like the visability, brakes, crisp lift and independent pto. The 3 cyl diesel is tops in fuel economy. Parts should be readily available from you "local Ford (er ah NH) dealer".

Mine has the metal canopy which I really like. Actually part of a ROPS system.

Good luck.

Should give you many years of reliable service.

Mark

A very tough and low maintenance tractor, too bad they can't figure out how to make them this good again. The only trouble spots I know of on these tractors are to check and make sure oil not leaking at the base of the steering wheel, and check to see if PTO will turn off.

$350 is a lot of bread of course, but if that is all you had to have fixed for what we are talking about, sounds like a deal. Don't know if you paid the work or did it yourself. Sounds high if you did it yourself and just had to buy a seal kit.

I had it repaired at the dealer. Didn't have time to do it myself right now. I thought it was reasonable.

Agree, reasonable if someone else did the work.....especially for a dealer.

I just redid my master cylinder on the 4010 Deere; real complicated as compared to a car; guess cause you have separate pedals if you only to push on one side whereas a car hits everything at once.

Got a $20 kit from the dealer with seals and stuff all over the place. Looked in the shop manual and had all the goodies to do the job; just turned out to be difficlut. Thought for a minute I was going to have to do that too.....take it to the dealer to get it fixed. But luck was with me.

Bill, I looked it up on iron search and seems to be a fair price for the condition that its in.That site has dealer listings and most of the 4600's were going for $7500-9000.

Thanks for responding. Was that price with or without a loader? I thought it looked like a fair price for the tractor, not a deal, but a fair price. With the loader I feel like I've got a chance at getting a pretty good deal. Just want to make sure that I do everything in my power to not buy a problem.
