850 Ford Live power

I have seen numerous references on the forum saying that the 850 Ford DOES NOT have live power. I confirmed with my Dad that the 850 he
bought new has always had live power. We have
overhauled the engine on this tractor only once
and did not install a clutch. This tractor definately has live power (depress the clutch to
stop movement) but continues to drive the PTO.
This is a 172ci. engine with 5sp. transmission.
What's the deal?

I looked at a 1955 650 that had a live PTO. THe tractor was clearly stamped 650 and i drove it and it had the two stage clutch. I think that ford did not differentiate the live/non live PTO until mid 1955. the one i looked at was a low serial number.

I gotta go with those that say the wrong number was stamped at the factory. Lucky you! Your dad got an 860 for 850 money! Wanna trade your "850" for mine? No? I don't blame you.

Really, the ONLY difference between an 850 and 860 is the live pto. There would be no point to offering a live pto option (either from the dealer or the factory) on the 850 since you could get the same thing with less hassle by just ordering an 860 from the start. Gotta be a number stamping error at the factory. You win!

It would not be impossible for the model number to be stamped wrong on the housing from the factory. And maybe the dealer didn't catch it when it was sold. People are only human.

Live PTO on an850 would make it an 860.

Stamping on the flat spot above the starter is
stamped 850. I recently painted this tractor and
it is clearly visible. Dad has the original in-
voice for this tractor and it does say it's an
850. Thanks for your reply.

You state that depressing the clutch pedal stops tractor movement but the PTO continues to turn. Does the tractor stop moving with the clutch pedal only half way down and then the PTO stops with the clutch pedal all the way down? Does the rod that runs from the clutch pedal to the throwout bearing shaft have a clevis threaded on the end of it with 2 sets of holes in it for the pin?
It is possible that the tractor was originally built as an 850 and then the dealer converted it to an 860 bfore selling it to your dad. The conversion would require a different flywheel, clutch and input shaft into the transmission. The housing and most of the transmission internals are the same for an 850 and 860.

awhtx, Yes. The tractor stops when the clutch is
depressed 1/2 way and the PTO stops when the clutch is completely depressed. My Dad bought this tractor new so unless modifications were made by the dealer, none have been done. Perhaps
it is an early 860 with 850 stamping on the housing????? Thanks, Bob

There are 17 parts that are different on an 860 vs 850 for the live pto so it would not be a 'simple' error. The 850 is not supposed to be live. Something got mixed up or converted somewhere along the way.

Thanks for the replies. The most logical answer is a factory stamping error or use of an 850 case
to build an 860. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. Thanks
