bearing preload

Currently rebuilding the transmission, differential, and axles on a NAA. I've read in the manuel about setting the bearing preload. It looks like they are using what appears to be a small torque wrench which I don't have. My question to those of you that know a lot more about this than I do is how important is this and what have you used to set the preload. I want to do it right but considering this one will see light work is good judgment, not loose/not binding, close enough?

AZglide, when you set the preload on your axles, start with 4 .010 shims two on either side. Bolt everything togeather then turn one axle forward by hand. If the opposite axle turns in the same direction its too tight you need more shims. Start by adding a .010 shim and keep adding a shim until by turning one axle forward the other axle starts turning backward and thats the correct preload for the axles. The naa book tells you to do something all togeather differently but a mechanic at new holland told me to do it this way and it worked. The pinion bearing preload is set using 2 nuts against a thrust washer. The preload is set at about 16 inch pounds but you can just snug up the nut and turn the shaft till you feel a drag. Tighten up the lock nut against the preload nut and bend the lock tabs of the washer to hold both in place and you are good to go.

For setting the pre-load on the transmission mainshaft and countershaft I used a piece of cord wrapped around each shaft and a fish weighing scale.
