Hello, just found this sight and am having fun looking, Lots of great info! I'm looking at a '78 ford 5600 4x4, with 2800Hr. new rubber, dosent smoke etc. It is in good shape. What's this worth? How about getting parts for the 4x4 etc. I don't know much about ford tractors, Are there any known problems I should look out for? Any info at all would be great! Thank you.

Not to sound negative, but if you were actually looking at this tractor why didn't you say how much they were asking?? Or are you trolling for prices and you are actually the seller wanting to know what a good price to ask is??

If I just offended I'm sorry, accept my apology. But these questions come up like yours, then two weeks later you see the tractor for sale on ebay, etc. Could be coincidence.

Heres the answer to your question.

Just saw a 5610 4x4 (little newer than yours).

They were asking $15,500. It needed EVERYTHING fixed on it. Quicktach loader was badly beat up, bucket cracked in two places, motor had so much blowby, I thought the radiator had overheated and was steaming, but no it was oil out the tube.
Sat for over a year before it someone bought it.

Windyhill, be ware of 2800 hours with new tires. My tractor has over 4000 hours and the original tires all around have about 50% front and 65% rear. Around here they routinely turn back the hours for resale. Look at shift knobs, pedals, steering wheel, etc. to better tell the actual hours.

I'm not going to argue with what you said, other than to perhaps add some. That's certainly not a lot of hours on the clock for a tractor that age. Beyond that, in my area it is common to see MFWD tractors that have done some or a lot of road work go through tires quickly. Some front bias tires (especially loader tractors see no more than 1000 hours. Without a loader, 2000 hours is common on a bias tire. Yes, I have old tractors that saw 6000 hours on a set, but I never see it on my main tractors that run the road. As an example, I have a 1991 Ford 3930 MFWD, with a loader at 3500 hours. It's now on the fourth set of fronts and the third set of rears. So to me, a new set of rubber is a bonus, and I wouldn't read much into it. Take care.

If it's a factory 4x4, it would have to be a late 1980 or 1981 model.

Parts are getting harder to get because of its age, and the ones you can get are spendy (the axle is made in Germany). If you can cross your parts list over to a similar model JD, the price comes down considerably.

See my comments as jimont noted on earlier pages. Otherwise, the 5600 is a pretty solid tractor.

The hundred series with factory 4WD were known as "Blue Power Specials".

Windyhill - You'll get good advice from Bern & Pernell on this site. We also purchased a 5600 FWA recently and our questions were answered by Bern back on pages 2 & 8 in this forum. We had much the same concerns as you have and ours has only 2275 hrs on it (came from a vineyard). They are really just updated versions of the venerable 5000 (our 5000 has 10,000hrs on it with just routine maintenance)

Thanks guys for the replies! jimont Hows the turning radious on your 5600? Did you find out anything about parts for your front axle? What do you think is a good price for this tractor? Is there some where I can go to find a value of this tractor? Thanks again! I'm in Pa by the way.

G'Day Windyhill - I live in southern Ontario near Lake Erie and we gave $13,900. Canadian for the 5600. I was talking to the dealership's parts man yesterday and he told me they have had several calls about this tractor (after it was sold) so there must be a demand for them. We looked at another which was in no way in as good a condition and they were asking a thousand more. As for FWA parts , I talked to Fawcett Tractor (large wrecking yard)who had just returned from a big show in California where they found a new after market manufacturer for this axle (catalogues are on the way to them). Evidently, not only John Deere, but IH as well used this ZF axle,so there should be a good demend for replacement parts.
As to turning radius, it is a little more than a regular 5600, but then that is to be expected. As Bern said though, continued very tight turns could pose a problem. We believe that, as with any equipment, regular maintenance and respecting every machine's known weak spots, will result in a long lived machine.
That said , FWA is an entirely new area for us so we will learn much as time goes on.
Sorry for the long post but I hope we've helped.
