This past weekend looked at a 63 Ford 4000 with p/s.I'm confused by the serial number stamped on the trans.by the starter. It's stamped 860 under that <>22422<>.Is there anywhere else i can look for a serial number.I'm thinking maybe the trans. was changed out ,because the rest of the tractor looks like a early 4000.Anybody have any thoughts.

If you are sure it is 4000 sheet metal,(the serial # could be from a 63-4000 or a 58-860), then it in all probability began life as a 4000 Select-O-speed. My guess is that at some point in time the SOS tranny has been replaced with the tranny from an earlier tractor. Are there any indications of a SOS shifter being mounted under the steering wheel, or a cable pto control on the right side just under the throttle control? Dan Robertson

How sure are you its a 4000?. Sounds more like a 58 800 series.
