Last Weekend while plowing the motor went dead as if I had turned the switch off. I took the distributor cap off to see if the points were firing. When I bumped the starter I noticed that the distributor shaft wasn"t turning. I pulled the distributor and didn"t see anything wrong with it so I replaced it and reset the timing. The tractor fired right up and ran fine for 10 seconds and then quit again. It jumped time two more times and after I reset it the forth time it ran fine the rest of the day. What am I missing? What should I be looking for? HELP!!!

It is common for the camshaft to break on that engine.

I ran into the same problem on one of these distributors. It had a shaft sweated into a sleave but with age it started to slip. After I drilled thru the sleave/shaft ass'y and installed a roll pin I had no more problem with it.

Big John2, sounds like the pin that hold your distributor drive gear is stripped. This gear runs against the cam, so if the dist was not turning, thats about the only thing. YOu were looking at both sides of the pin but not in the middle? I've rebuilt several of these dis. and you must remove this gear to replace the seal and bushing. I've replaced them with a spirol pin and had no failured.

Kelly, where would I be able to get the seal and bushing? My catalogs show everything but those. or do you have to buy the shaft to get them?

Richard, the only source I know of is New Holland. The part number on the seal is D8NN-12A118-AA its about $7.00 you might cross to C/R or National. The bushing number in 7RA-12132-A and its about $8.00. Thanks, Kelly.
