Ok guys...time to give me some advise...I have found a 971 Diesel for sale...everything is ok as far as the current owner says...tin ok, tires or, engine and SOS tranny ok.

I'm thinking about looking at it. I'm sure it needs some work...they all do when you get them. The question I have is about whether this tractor has any collector value...

The owner wants $1500 and says he will take $1400. He has been trying to sell it for a while, but the SOS has people spooked.

Second question it would putting in a 4 speed from a 640 add or subtract value? I can get a whole 640 for $1000...needs lots of work...

OK guys...what advise can you give me...not trying to make money, just rying to keep from dumping more down a hole...thanks...BB

Thanks for the help guys...I'm not sure about the 971D...I like gas tractors and I don't need another tractor, just looking for a project. I love working on tractors and if I could figure out a way to get someone to pay me to work on them I would just do that and just own a few really interesting ones.

The 640 has been in the back of my mind for 8 months now...I looked at it and it probably would be easy to restore and a good keeper. I may just have to call him back and make him an offer if it is still there...Thanks...BB

I just paid $750 for a 69 Ford 3000 Diesel. It does need some work but I enjoy doing most of the work myself. I know nothing about a diesel so it will be a learning experience. My wife says that I can't save every old tractor I see. But I try to at least find them a good home. Are you planning on keeping it for your own collection or buying to sell? Good Luck Barry

I'd get them both for that price. If the 640 has decent sheetmetal, you could part it out and be left with an almost free 4 speed transmission for "just in case" the SOS turns out to be a headache. Or you could take your time and slowly restore the 640 as you have time and resources.

Bama; I don't think it has any real collector value. It is just another older tractor. I wouldn't put a 4 speed in it, if it is decent and sounds good when running, you couldn't go wrong for around $1000 figure! It is getting that not many mechanics really understand a SOS Tranny!!, I for one don't want one, but lots of fellows swear by them, I think more swear at them..Luck to you.....Van

You want it. You need it. You can't live without it. Drive by slow. 2 or more flat tires, go back home. Only 1 flat tire, stop and talk. Then tell us all about it.
