I saw a Ford 961 in WI today. It was in great shape wasn't leaking anything I could see. It had a horrible paint job but looked to be all there and running. Rubber is in good shape. The implement dealer wanted $4500 for it but was open to offers.

I have a 2N now and need to know the many differences between the N series and this modle of tacktor other than horse power. A guy can never have too many tractors just too little storage space.

Could you folks fill me in on the differences and is this a fare price.

Andy; Jim fr UT, has given you a good run down. I was dealing on one, offered $2500, but didn't get it, she sold it for $2750, but to be fair it hadn't run for 5 years, It was all there, and clean, but just hadn't been used. I think $4500 is a little on the high side, he would have to come down if I was buying...You can always offer less..... .Van

The differences? Wow, where to begin? You might want to start with the Vintage Ford Tractor Resource and see what you can learn there. Just quickly, the 901 series was about 2 series beyond the N series (Jubilee/NAA, x00 Series, then x01 Series). The 901 is a row crop (high clearance) model that usually came with a narrow front end, but could have been equipped with a wide front either from the factory or aftermarket. The engine is the 172 cu in "Red Tiger" overhead valve 4 cyl where the N is a flathead 4. The hydraulics are live which is a great improvement over the N. In the case of the 961 that you are looking at, the 6 in the middle of the model number indicates that this is equipped with live pto. The live pto is operated by means of a dual clutch. If you push the clutch pedal halfway down the tractor stops but the pto keeps going. Push the clutch the rest of the way down to stop the pto. Also, the 951 and the 961 have a 5 speed trans instead of a 4 speed. Make sure it doesn't jump out of gear in 3rd or reverse (the most common gears to have this problem). I saw a really nice 961 sell around here for about $3,000 but I think that was a steal. All in all $4500 isn't too bad if everything (including the dual clutch and 5 speed tranny) are in GOOD working order. That dual clutch is more expensive to replace than the single clutch. You can always offer less because of the terrible paint. Good luck.
