Hot water helped free up my JD420 (vertical engine). I put a pipe fitting on an old 20# propane tank and plumbed it on it's side into the bottom of the tractor engine block with a piece of radiator hose. I filled the engine block and tank with water and heated the tank. I used a propane brush torch, but you could use charcoal or even wood if your connections to the tractor are long enough. Have the connecting pipe slanting up to the tractor so the hot water will rise. Get it boiling good and let it cool a few times. The water will boil over into the cylinders, so sponge it out and dump in some Kroil or other penetrating oil before it cools off.

I then drilled a piece of square tube to line up with the headbolt holes and put some scrap metal pieces under it over the piston and tightened it down until the piston started moving down. Worked for me. Good luck.

Archie,

First off -- go slow. It's a lot cheaper than buying a new set of pistons! You can break a ring land pretty easy.

I like to mix diesel and a very light oil like 3in1 and let it set for a week. If you don't have a week, you can use PB Blaster or similar overnight. If it still stuck (and probably will be) try heating up the block with a torch. I like to use propane near aluminum as acetylene can melt it quick! Again, go slow heating the cylider above the piston and the empty cyl next to the stuck one and the outside of the block. Don't let the flame touch the piston!

If possible, do it with the engine crank side up. When the block is hot put ice in the bottom of the piston to shrink it away from the cylinder and gently tap it out. You have to remove the ridge first and lube the cylinder to let it slide out.

Good luck!
